Becoming an expert in your field takes time and energy. Many suggest that it takes 10,000 hours of study or practice in your speciality to master a subject.

Experts are people with advanced and in-depth knowledge and skills in their chosen career and industry. They are often recognised and awarded for their achievements in their field.

Follow our step-by-step guide to gain expertise in your chosen career path.

1. Find out exactly what you’re interested in

Identify what exactly it is about your career that you are passionate about. For example if you work in marketing which specific aspect interests you most, is it copywriting, SEO, PPC, email marketing or social media? Once you have narrowed this down to one particular area you can start to lean in on the subject matter.

2. Start with the basics

Focus on the basics and study the foundations of the topic before moving onto more advanced tasks. You can take online courses, read books and watch YouTube, Tik Tok and Instagram videos to gain knowledge and learn new skills.

3. Dedicate time

Set aside time dedicated to gaining knowledge and practicing your skills. This could be a specific time each day and/or week to reading, doing a course, or doing practical assessments. You could also use this time to ask for guidance from a mentor within the industry.

4. Set goals for yourself

Write down several different goals that you want to achieve by a certain date. For example, if you wish to learn how to master Google Ads you could start by enrolling yourself on one of Google’s online courses before moving onto setting up paid adverts for your business.

5. Find a mentor

The most successful people tend to have a mentor to act as a sounding board and provide them with help and guidance throughout their career. Choose a mentor with expertise in your area and with many years of experience. Your mentor should genuinely care about the success of your career and help you to stay focused on your career through helping you to improve your skills, confidence and knowledge.

6. Seek feedback

Seek feedback and constructive criticism from work colleagues and those in the industry who have more experience than yourself. Take on board the feedback and make the necessary changes to improve your work and improve.

7. Focus on progression

Always strive to progress in your role. Update your goals and milestones and work towards your next challenge.
