What is an Apprenticeship?

The Apprenticeship Frameworks have been designed to allow employers to recruit an Apprentice or develop their current staff by combining technical knowledge with practical skills.  Typically Apprentices are aged between 16 – 23 but in some cases they can be older depending on your requirements.  They are a fantastic way to gain new practical and professional skills by completing on the job training and gaining a nationally recognised qualifications whilst working at the same time.

Apprenticeship Grant for Employers:  

On 16th November 2011 the government announced a new incentive to encourage thousands of small companies who don’t already employ an Apprentice to recruit one between the ages of 16 – 24 years old. It is available for employers with up to 50 employees and is a payment of £1,500 payable in one payment after a qualifying apprentice has completed 13 weeks ‘in-learning’.  This funding will be available to companies in all industries and for Apprenticeships at all levels.  For further information please refer to the Employer Fact Sheet.

What can you expect from us as a training provider?

As a training provider Pin Point will work with you to:

  • Help you decide which Apprenticeship framework is right for the role
  • Explain how the Apprenticeship will work for you and the funding available
  • Agree a training programme with you for the Apprentice
  • Help you recruit an Apprentice or support your existing staff into Apprenticeships
  • Manage all aspects of the training, evaluation and ensure all national quality standards are met

What does the Apprenticeship framework consist of?

There are over 200 Apprenticeship frameworks available covering 1,200 job roles within a variety of industry sectors. The frameworks are flexible and can be mapped over to meet with your company policies and procedures.  All training is delivered onsite and there is no day release to college.

The framework is typically made up of the following elements:

  • ERR (Employment Rights & Responsibilities)
  • Functional Skills (Maths, English & ICT)
  • Personal Learning & Thinking Skills (PLTS)
  • BTEC / Knowledge Based Certificate (not applicable to all frameworks)
  • Level 2 Certificate / Diploma (The BTEC and Certificate/Diploma are often a combined qualification)

The Advanced (Level 3) framework is typically made up of the following elements:

  • ERR (Employment Rights & Responsibilities)
  • Functional Skills (Maths, English & ICT)
  • Personal Learning & Thinking Skills (PLTS)
  • BTEC / Knowledge Based Certificate (not applicable to all frameworks)
  • Level 3 Certificate / Diploma

How do we typically deliver the Level 2 Apprenticeship framework?

  • Week 1 Induction & Initial Diagnostic
  • Week 2 – 10 ERR completed and commencement of Functional Skills and PLTS
  • Week 11 – 21 Complete Functional Skills Learning & Resource, Introduce BTEC learning materials and assessment of Diploma / Certificate
  • Week 21 – 39 Introduce Diploma / Certificate, Complete Functional Skills online / paper based assessment
  • Week 39 – 51 Complete Diploma / Certificate
  • Week 52 Complete Apprenticeship programme

What are Personal Learning & Thinking Skills (PLTS)?

Personal Learning & Thinking Skills is a group of six skills titled; Independent Enquirers, Creative Thinkers, Reflective Learners, Team Workers, Self Managers and Effective Participators. The framework captures the essential skills of; managing self, managing relationships with others, managing own learning, performance and work. These skills will be especially beneficial to young people to enter the work place and their adult life as confident capable individuals.

How are the Apprenticeships delivered / assessed?

Assessment is conducted by a qualified Assessor with a wealth of experience and occupational competence in the area of learning. There are many ways a learner’s individual competence can be assessed including;

  • Observations
  • Product Evidence (naturally occurring in the workplace)
  • Questioning
  • Guided Discussion

All assessments take place on the job and the learners will require an agreed amount of hours both on & off the job to successfully complete all elements of the framework.

How long does an Apprenticeship take?

  • Typically an Intermediate (Level 2) Apprenticeship will take around 12 months
  • Typically an Advanced (Level 3) Apprenticeship will take around 12-18 months

How much does a new Apprentice get paid?

New Apprentices are guaranteed a minimum wage of £3.40 per hour for their first year. Some employers prefer to pay them a slightly higher rate. On completion of the Apprenticeship programme Apprentices must be paid at least minimum wage.
