To lead and manage procurement activities for a mechanical engineering business delivering complex, project-based work. The role will ensure the cost-effective, timely and quality-focused supply of mechanical components, materials and subcontract services, while developing the skills and capability of a Buyer within the team.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver procurement strategies that support mechanical and electrical engineering projects from concept to completion.

  • Source, evaluate and negotiate with suppliers for mechanical components, raw materials, subcontract fabrication, and specialist engineering services.

  • Build and maintain strong supplier relationships to ensure reliability, quality and competitiveness.

  • Monitor and manage supplier performance, ensuring compliance with specifications, delivery schedules and quality standards.

  • Collaborate closely with project managers, design engineers and production teams to align procurement activities with project timelines and technical requirements.

  • Identify and implement cost-saving opportunities, value engineering solutions and supplier development initiatives.

  • Manage procurement and the goods in team.

  • Support effective inventory management for mechanical parts and assemblies, optimising stock levels while mitigating risks.

  • Ensure all procurement activities comply with company policies, contractual obligations and relevant regulations.

  • Provide leadership, mentoring and day-to-day support to the Buyer in the team, promoting their professional growth and development.

  • Proactively contribute to continuous improvement of procurement processes, tools and supplier networks.


Person Specification:

Essential:

  • Proven experience in a Purchasing Manager, Senior Buyer or equivalent role within mechanical engineering, manufacturing or fabrication.

  • Solid understanding of mechanical and electrical components, machining processes, fabrication, paint and related supply chains.

  • Strong negotiation, commercial and contract management skills.

  • Experience working within project-based environments with multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and support junior procurement staff.

  • Excellent communication, organisation and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience leading a team.

Desirable:

  • Degree qualified

  • CIPS qualification or working towards.

  • Experience using ERP/MRP systems.

  • Knowledge of quality standards and compliance requirements in mechanical engineering.
